My teeth are really yellowed and I don’t have much money to fix it. Do you have any cost effective solutions that really work?

A: I would first suggest getting a hygienic cleaning with a prophy jet, which uses a baking soda spray followed by tooth polishing. This will help determine the type and amount of real discoloration present in the enamel of your teeth. Then, you can either opt for in-office whitening using a light activated approach, at-home whitening, or porcelain veneers to get a more permanent whiteness.
With the professional in-office and take-home whitening products the whitening gel is stronger than that which is in over-the-counter systems and both professional systems allow for the whitening gel to completely cover all of the teeth. Although over-the-counter products, such as whitening strips, are often cheaper they usually only cover a person’s center six front teeth and don’t go in between the teeth well.
Having said that, what we do know is that when choosing between teeth whitening strips (over-the-counter) and professional systems from a dental office, selecting the system whose instructions you find easiest to comply with will make it more likely that you will achieve the whitening results you are looking for. Compliance to a system is key .
